The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Mikao Usui in
Japan early in the 20th century, which is activated by intention. Reiki’s natural
healing energy may work on every level, not just the physical, and promote the body’s
regenerative self healing ability. The Japanese word Reiki means ‘Universal Energy’.
Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through
all living things and is vital to well-being, known as ‘ki’ in Japan, ‘chi’ in China
and ‘prana’ in India. Reiki is a non-invasive therapy whose purpose is to treat holistically
and to restore homeostasis.
How can Reiki help me?
The energy of Reiki can be used to great effect in many ways. Whether you are suffering
from stress or tension, and the many symptoms associated with this, or wishing to
improve the quality of relationships at home or work, the beneficial effects of Reiki
may occur on many levels. Reiki may be able to accelerate the healing of physical
problems, balance the emotions, and free us from restrictive mental attitudes. It
may also provide a closer connection with inner wisdom. Reiki is a non-invasive therapy
that can be used without fear of any side-effects or overdose. It can be used with
confidence alongside conventional medication or natural remedies because it acts
in a complementary way.
Who can have Reiki?
It is suitable for people of all ages from children to the elderly although anyone
with a serious medical complaint should inform their therapist before undertaking
a course of treatment. GP consent is advisable for certain conditions.
What can I expect from a treatment?
The first treatment lasts about an hour and a half as it includes a consultation
session in which you will be asked to give details about your health and lifestyle.
This information will be treated strictly confidentially. You will also be asked
to sign a consent form showing that you understand the aims and limitations of the
treatments. A session is carried out lying down or sitting, in a comfortable and
peaceful environment. There is no need to remove any clothing. The practitioner places
their hands gently, in a series of positions, on or over the body. You automatically
draw in only as much Reiki as is needed, using it in whatever way is most appropriate
at the time. Your treatment will last between 35-40 minutes. Reiki can also be incorporated
into other treatments.
You may like to listen to some soft music to help you to relax. Afterwards you will
be asked to give your feedback about any changes or sensations you experienced. Reiki
might be felt as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations,
or nothing at all. Reiki is deeply relaxing and has a calming effect. Treatment is
enhanced if you can rest for a while afterwards and drink plenty of water to help
the body detoxify. The beneficial effects may be felt for several days.
How often will I need to come?
This will depend upon a number of factors but it is recommend initially to undertake
a four week course of treatments after which we can assess your needs and decide
whether you would like to continue having regular 'maintenance' treatments e.g. every
2 weeks to a month. Responses vary and if there are long-standing symptoms it may
take the body a while to recuperate.
