Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the principle that the entire body is reflected in reflexes in the hands and feet. Tension, illness, weakness and diseases can manifest in the reflexes and may be experienced as tender or painful areas. Precise thumb and finger techniques activate the body’s self-healing capacity encouraging relaxation and rebalancing in all areas.

Hand Reflexology is depicted alongside foot reflexology in this wall painting found in the Egyptian pyramids (tomb of Ankhmahor) dating back thousands of years.

What is the history of Reflexology?

Reflexology was being performed on hands and feet in many ancient cultures – notably Egyptian, Indian and Chinese – as long as 5000 years ago to relieve pain and promote healing. Reflexology, as it is practised today in the West, developed from the work of Dr W Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat surgeon, in the early part of the 20th century.

How can Reflexology help me?

Reflexology is known to have a profoundly relaxing effect, promoting healing and regeneration throughout the body.

  • Reduce stress and induce relaxation
  • Revitalise energy
  • Rebalance the whole system
  • Help to put us more ‘in touch’ with ourselves

Reflexology is suitable for anyone from a tiny baby to an elderly person. Treatments are unique as each person’s needs and responses are individual. Those who are elderly or in a fragile state of health will need shorter, lighter treatments. If you have any serious or unstable medical conditions you are advised to inform your therapist who will then say if Reflexology is suitable and whether consent is needed from your GP.

What can I expect from a treatment?

The first session lasts about an hour as it includes a consultation in which you will be asked to give details about your health and lifestyle. This information will be treated strictly confidentially. You will also be asked to sign a consent form showing that you understand the aims and limitations of the treatments. Your treatment will last between 35-40 minutes and you may like to listen to some soft music to help you to relax. Afterwards you will be asked to give your feedback about any changes or sensations you experienced.

How often will I need to come?

This will depend upon a number of factors but it is recommended initially to undertake a four week course of treatments after which we can assess your needs and decide whether you would like to continue having regular ‘maintenance’ treatments e.g. every 2 weeks to a month. Responses vary and if there are long-standing symptoms it may take the body a while to begin the rebalancing process.

Reflexology can be performed on the hands as well as the feet, which is especially useful for those who don’t like having their feet touched or the elderly.
